Best sparkling wine by the Spanish Association of Wine Journalists
The Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers (AEPEV) has recognised Recaredo Terrers 2008 as the best sparkling wine 2015 (in a tie for the top position). The award was presented by AEPEV secretary Ernesto Gallud at a ceremony held at the Parador Nacional de Mèrida.
Terrers 2008 is made with grapes from a mosaic of Recaredo family vineyards in the Bitlles Valley Highlands of Alt Penedès. Calcareous soils give this long-aged sparkling wine —made from a blend of Xarel·lo (52%), Macabeo (32%) and Parellada (16%) grape varieties—its distinctive character.
Vines are cultivated using organic farming methods and only natural fertilisers, with spontaneous vegetation to foster biodiversity, loosen the soil, and regulate water retention and drainage—vital in the practice of dry farming.
Seventy per cent of AEPEV members took part in the voting process, which involved three qualifying rounds and included 153 wines and 36 spirits from around Spain. Catalonia was second only to Andalusia in the number of distinctions awarded to its wines.
