Recaredo Brut de Brut, voted best sparkling wine by readers of the book Gourmets
Each year readers of the Guía de Vinos Gourmets have the opportunity to cast their votes to reward quality wines and recognise the contribution made by professionals in the sector. In this year’s edition, the readers have chosen Recaredo Brut de Brut 2006, Finca Serral del Vell as Spain’s best sparkling wine 2016.
Recaredo Brut de Brut 2006 is a sober, elegant blend of Xarel·lo (53%) and Macabeu (47%)—a natural brut nature (with no added sugar), aged in the bottle with a natural cork stopper for over seven years. The terroir character and the microclimate of the estate give each vintage its own unique character.
The vines on the Serral del Vell estate grow on loamy soil (composed of sand, silt and clay) containing gravel, pebbles and stones that facilitate drainage, allowing water to penetrate deeply to the vine roots. The land, with its highly calcareous soils, is located in the Bitlles River Highlands in the county of Alt Penedès (Barcelona).
Recaredo practises organic viticulture in its vineyards, using only natural, organic fertilisers. The vines grow on spontaneous vegetation cover that fosters biodiversity, loosens the soil, and regulates water retention and drainage—vital in the practice of dry farming.
In addition to paying tribute to Recaredo, readers of the Guía de Vinos Gourmets recognised Catalan sommelier Josep “Pitu” Roca and the actor Juan Echanove for his “continued support to the wine sector”.
